SHEEP

EXMOORE HORNS

KEEPING THINGS LOCAL...

Given where Westcott Farm is situated, it seemed silly to stray too far afield when looking for our sheep. As such, we raise predominately Exmoor Horn and Exmoor Mule sheep. These hardy breeds have evolved over the years to thrive on the pastures and hills of the area.

The Exmoor Horns are a pure-bred sheep that is smaller than a more commercial animal and is slow maturing. We find that this extra time growing and developing in the way nature intended leads to a far superior flavour.

ON THE FARM...

We lamb inside towards the end of March. Each year once the mothers and lambs have bonded and they are both strong enough to go outside we let them into the fields to graze. Our lambs have nothing but their mothers’ milk and grass and are 100% pasture fed. We wouldn’t have this any other way – chiefly because being able to have freedom and space to wander and graze is what these animals deserve, but also because the diverse mix of grasses and herbs that they choose to snack on really comes through in the flavour of the meat.
